When my hubby gets home from Iraq we are planning on going on a vacation just him, me, and our two small children. We don't know where to go. We are driving. We will not fly. It can't be too expensive or really far away. We live in Arkansas. Any ideas of where we could go? Know any cities or towns with fun things to do? Something the kids will enjoy too?

Go to Blue Ridge, GA and rent a picturesque mountain cabin with a view. http://www.blueridgemountains.com/blue_ridge.html The kids will LOVE the scenic railroad and the freedom and safety of this beautiful small town. My kids liked panning for gold and gemstones and picking fruit in the orchards. There is also the Southern Tree Plantation, although we didn't have time to go there. Oh..and there is a GREAT 50's style diner that the kids just LOVED. I can't remember the name, but you won't miss it. It's near the train station. Most of the cabins have hot tubs for a little romance after the kids go to bed. There is antiquing galore and the Ocoee Whitewater Center among many other places nearby! Have fun!

I visited Kansas City and found the famous KC City BBQ to be wonderful, and they are also famous for jazz there, which I also enjoyed. A little further away is Chicago, my favorite city in the U.S. Chicago has lots of fun attractions like the Sears Tower of course, and the Children's Museum at Navy Pier. Navy Pier also has an amazing architecture tour by boat, a large ferris wheel, swings, "jumping fountains" and unique shops. It also has two great zoos there, the Hancock building and other points of interest. I don't know much about St. Louis, but I've passed through there and there is the Arch. Indianapolis had a pretty good zoo, but again I don't know as much about that city. Then there's always Florida, with the whole Disney thing and the beaches.

Cheers!

Find some travel brochures and compare which place has the things that interest all of you. I am not sure of the distance but if you want to travel out of Arkansas these are the closest states to you.

List the pros and cons about some of the places you would like to see. If you are still undecided then pick the places that you find in the travel brochure and put them in a hat and pick it out of a hat. I don't know what season you are going to take your vacation so I am not going to assume when your going to go.

I could say come to Canada but you don't want to go that far. It's nice to have visitors from the States.

Go to Vermont, go hiking all over the place, if hiking isn't your thing, take the gondola from Stowe to the top of Mt. Mansfield, the tallest mountain in Vermont, go shopping in downtown Burlington on Church St, visit the Echo Science Center, Shelburne Farms, Shelburne Museum, the Burlington bikepath, visit or stay in the VonTrapp Family Lodge, originally built by the same family from the Sound of Music. In the winter go skiing at Bolton Valley Resort. Let me know if this helps.

Well, maybe it might be too far or expensive, but...

Go to Las Vegas! It is the number one recognized sybol of American capitalism at work (smile.) -- Yes, the American way your hubby fought so hard for. It has a bunch more kid friendly attractions than it did 20 years ago (it's not ALL about gambling.) Lots of sights, attractions, and experiences to enjoy within.

Ok, if not Las Vegas... Maybe Branson Missouri?

1. it depends on your budget.
2. how old the kids are and what they can and can't do.
3. a common interest that all will share.
4. vacation traffic and popularity.
I would recommend Florida because there is so much to do.
