And to answer your possible next question of "Well then, why do they still call them a redshirt?" It is basically just for informative purposes. A redshirt sophomore and a sophomore still both have 2 years of eligibility left.

If he was a redshirt this year, and then played, he lost his extra year of eligibility. If you play even one minute of a game, then your red-shirt status is done.

this means he redshirted in a previous year. So he's not really a sophomore, but in terms of years of NCAA eligibility, he's a sophomore.
