The North certainly was always very progressive when it came to education, partially because of the emphasis the Puritans put on the necessity of all believers (women as well as men) to be able to read the Bible. In the South, private education was more the rule.

The 1850 compromise, like most compromises, satisfied some people and made others angry. Therefore, again like most compromises, it had within it the seeds of conflict.
