One time when I was little (about 8) I was having a nightmare, so I tried to wake up. First I tried to open my eyes but they wouldn't open. So then I tried to open my eyelids with my hands, but I couldn't move. So then I tried to call my mom, so that she could wake me up, but I couldn't talk either. What was going on?

something to store in the back of your head for the next time it happens in dreams you cannot read or feel pain, so in the dream you pinch yourself. In your mind you know it hurts, so your waking mind will feel it and wake you from the dream...works for me

You were paralyzed by fear. I don't know if that's a medical condition or not, but I do know that there have been times, especially after waking up, that I was unable to move or open my eyes. And for speech, that leaves me on a regular basis, at least coherent speech.

If this happens more than once, please see a doctor. Otherwise, file it under "weird experiences" and use it to impress people.

there is a phenomenon called sleep paralysis. this usually occurs when you are awakened from REM sleep. It is very scary, but it usually eases up within a few moments and you get back control of your body. I recently had a nightmare where I couldn't move or call out for a few seconds. I finally managed to let out vocal sounds that sounded more like a sheep than human. My husband ran over to me and touched me. I was then able to pull myself out of that paralytic state.
