Not being a Christian myself, it is hard for me to understand people getting irate about "taking Jesus out of Christmas" and then four months later those same people don't mind that "Easter" is named after the Babylonian fertility goddess Ishtar.

Actually, "Easter" is named after the Germanic goddess of Spring..."Eostre". I think that many Christians do not realize the pagan origin of the English name for this holiday. Also, 'easter' is not commercialized like Christmas is. There isn't as much emotional baggage with the name "Easter" that there is with "Christmas" which, after all, incorporates the "title" of Jesus in the name. "Christ" translates to Lord dor Savior. The word "Christmas" is a shortened form of "Christ Mass", which refered to the special Mass said on December 25th by the Roman Catholic Church to commemorate the birth of "The Christ" or "The Savior", whose name was Jesus. Remember, it was not common knowledge until recently that Christmas was originally a pagan holiday which the Christians took as their own. Easter has always been the day that the 'resurrection' of Christ was celebrated. In Spainish-language countries it is call "Paschal" - the "feast of the lamb", since Jesus was called the "Lamb of God", the sacrifice used to purify humankind. The Ultimate Scapgoat, that was put to death carrying the sins of all on its back.

While the social engineers have done a good job of ridding the Christmas holiday of any of it's religious meaning, it is still recognized as a stat holiday in most countries and I don't hear any of the non-Christians or atheists bitching about the getting the day off. I figure saying "Merry Christmas" isn't such a bad thing for anyone to say since many people benefit from this holiday. While I don't get upset at 'happy holidays' I'm not particularly impressed with terms like 'holiday' party or 'holiday' tree, those statements are just silly.

What people are upset about is that the liberals want to take "Christ" out of everything. It doesn't matter that Christmas ( when we celebrate the birth of Christ) and Easter (resurrection day) were combined with pagan holidays 1500 years ago. It is unfortunate that the term "Easter" has become more common than Resurrection Sunday. And as for Christmas-we don't know when Jesus was born. We do seem to have a lot of stuff mixed up. For years the Baptist fought against the Easter bunny, Christmas presents, and Halloween. I agree with you-the church is paganistic-and don't know it. Yeah, there is a lot wrong, and it need a good cleaning. The church is screwed up just like the world because it is full or the world.
But-I still believe in Jesus, and i always will!

The people who rant about these things are never the sharpest pencils in the box. It is the result of a fear based religion that lowers consciousness. Easter is the celebration of the rebirth of the earth - the resurrection of the body of the earth mother. The Jesus thing is a tack-on. Like Christmas or Yule which anciently celebrated the rebirth of the Sun-King in the womb of the Virgin (the Mater - ":mother", mater -ial world.)

The American fundamentalist Conservative Christians who are the only one's who really get upset about the whole "Happy Holidays" thing are often incredibly ignorant about the history of their own faith, which is why they are so quick to get upset over things ("happy holidays", "Xmas" etc) that a more knowledgeable Christian would think twice about.

the christmas season coincides with a number of celebrations of various other faiths...

easter doesnt....no competition....

btw... both easter and christmas were originally ancient pagan rituals/festivals....the christians had a hard time wiping them out so they spun them and claimed them for themselves....

Easter, like Christmas, has been purged of its original origin.
