Coax comes from the wall to the cable modem.
Cat5 from the cable modem to a ROUTER.
Cat5 from the router to computer 1.
Cat5 from the router to computer 2.

Computers may not recognize the Internet until they are re-started.

The thing that you connect to the cable box has to be able to do something called DHCP--which means Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, a protocol for assigning dynamic IP addresses to devices on a network. A hub generally does not do this.

Basically, it needs to be able to give out address for every machine connected to it. A ROUTER does this. A router can act as a hub, but not the other way around. Good wired and wireless routers are cheap and easy to install. Look for one by NETGEAR or LINKSYS.

The DSL modem will just connect your household to the internet. If you were to get a router (highly recommended), it will join your two computers together and also plug into your DSL modem so your two computers can share the internet connection. If you were to use another DSL modem, you would need another phone line as well as another internet account. One connection is more than sufficient for your household.

It is all very complicated and unnecessary - you should try using an external hard drive, instead, which can be used on both computers.
