Must really upset you that you live in a country where some people can't (or won't) pay for those things. Guess you should move to another country. I heard taxes are low in the Bahamas.

Good for you then you have an obligation to help your fellow man. And you never know when one day that will not be the case.
These programs help those that do have money. If it wasn't for these programs then our economy would be vulnerable. Medical prices would be even higher, companies would close because the retirees and disabled people wouldn't have dollars to spend, which in turn would mean that there would be companies and other businesses effected, more people would be put out of work due with cutbacks or companies that close their doors forever. Which in turn effects even more people because now those people aren't paying for services or products causing other companies to face cutbacks. Before you know it there is a major depression. It might even effect you who think you are way up high in an ivory tower untouchable. It might effect your children and their future and then where would you be? One look at the depression in our countries history and you will find that even those who were ultra rich before the crash never thought they would be in a position that they lost everything. Why do you think there were so many suicides? They just couldn't wrap their heads around what had happened to them. People like you who think their financial picture will never change.
You may have money but you seem to be morally bankrupt. I pity you. Personally I feel that it's important for me to help others. Not just through taxes for government programs but in giving to the non profit sector. Not all these people are looking for a hand out, many are just needing a hand up. There is a difference.
During the depression my great grandparents were lucky enough they were not effected by the depression in the same way as most people. They were in no way rich but they had enough. My great grandmother shared what they did have. People roaming the country trying to find work, any work that came to her town were fed in her backyard she had wooden tables and did everything she could to help them. She did it with graciousness. My Grandmother and her brothers helped, so even though she had 4 children of her own she shared what they had. The family ate the same things she gave those in need. Nothing better than what she fed these strangers, that way she could stretch the money and help more people. She set an example to our families future generations that it's a moral duty to help others who are not as fortunate. If our world was like this it would be a different place.
My other grandmother who was on the opposite end of Her family owned a dairy. The delivered milk to families with small children who could not pay. Why? Because people are all that matter in this life. No matter what your assets are you can't take them with you.
As my Grandma Lula often said "When Howard Hughes died someone asked the executive of the estate how much he left behind, the answer was everything." You can't take it with you. Money and Possessions come and go but what you do for your fellow man can make a lasting effect on generations.
Think about it.

I'm happy for you that you are in a position to send your kids to private schools, pay for expensive health care and provide for your own retirement. Perhaps you should also reconsider using public highways, parks, infrastructures, City, County, State and Federal buildings, services and monuments because they only exist through tax dollars. Or, do you also consider these "crazy projects" as well. Perhaps you have forgotten that Social Security was a tax imposed on the people who now collect it in their retirement. Many who find they need help from these "crazy projects" are the working poor ,aged or ill and paid their share in taxes during their working lives. Undoubtedly, your are now enjoying the fruits of THEIR labors.
Don't be so quick to look down your nose at others just because you have it so good!

Because even if you build a big fence around your house, you are still in the united states.
You are still protected by the army, airforce, police.
If you didn't pay taxes you would also have 35million poor people robbing you and guiloteening you in your drive - and no-one and nothing on earth to protect you.
You are independant but about only 1/100 as much as you like to think.
The aristos in france made a similair ("f*ck the poor) mistake.

We all pay for the right to live in this free country, maybe you should look into another place to live where you will not have all the things that the average American takes for granted. I hear that there is an opening in Iraq!
I bet that you have taken advantage of some of the benefits of this country. The road that you take to the Country Club for example.

because you live in this country and any good nation takes care of its people. you benefit from SS and have the oppurtunity to benefit from other 'crazy projects'.
we spend money on what we value. if we value something we expect every american to be entitled to it.
we value education, we value taking care fo the elderly after they've spent their lives working to help their fellow citizens, we value lending a helping hand to those who are low....
if you don't like, you are more than free to pick up a pass port and leave the country
