My cd rom drive was left open and I accidentally got my sweatpants caught unto it and it pulled it out of place. I pressed the "open/close" button and it wouldnt close so I pushed it back closed. Now when I hit the "open/close" button, the light blinks as if its about to open, but its jammed shut. I tried the sticking a pin to the small hole trick but that didnt work. Is my computer permantly damaged????

Thanks in advance . . .

if you know a bit about computers then you could try to open the cd drive(as in take off its casing) and realign the disk tray
Good Luck

It's damaged mechanically. Replace it with a new DVD burner, they will burn CDs as well as DVDs. You can get these at Wal-Mart at a fair price (approx. $40 USD for a Lite-On DVD 16X internal burner)! Unplug the computer, have a "Phillips" screwdriver handy. Remove the case cover, and "ground" yourself by grabbing the metal framework of the case BEFORE touching anything inside. Unplug the power plug and the IDE ribbon cable from the old drive. Remove the screws that hold the drive in place with the "Phillips" screwdriver, then you may have to remove a front case cover to slide the drive out of the case. Set the jumper on the back of the new DVD unit to the "master" position, and if you have a second optical drive set the jumper on it to the "slave" position. Slide the new drive into the same depth in the case as th old drive was and secure it with the screws. Plug the IDE ribbon back in and then plug the power cable back in. Replace the case covers and power up. Wait for the drivers to load up in WinXp, a balloon message will appear in the tray on the desktop, when it's gone, the drivers have loaded and your new DVD drive is ready for use.

I agree - your CD player is possibly dead, but it's a fairly easy fix.

Keep in mind this may be the ideal time to replace it with a DVD player/burner. It's the same procedure as replacing the CD drive and they are about the same price.

Problems reading and writing CDs are common. In many cases, the problem can be solved by checking the PC with free software, hardware modifications and cleaning the CD drive. I found the information at http://fixit.in/cdrdrive.html useful

Fear not! If you can change a light bulb, you can remove and install a new CD player. I agree with the previous poser---upgrade now.

No, just the CD drive. You should probably replace it, they're pretty cheap.
