Sound like you have two differeny issues, the security light si likely caused by broken wire at the ignition switch, common problem, as for the shifter I have replaced a few but, dont recall the reason??

You might have to call the dealer and possibly get a security code. Hope this helps.

If you plan on keeping the car for some time you might want to invest in a 'Chilton' Manual for the car. price somewhere around $25.00 give or take a dollar or two.

my sons 99 t/a did the same thing.i took it to the chevy dealer and it was something to do with the neutral switch in the console,also the shifter knob didnt need depressing to go into any gear,they said they lubed it.wish i could help more.

Time to call out the tow truck, take it in and get it fixed.
