I know you can keep them in an aquarium, but I don't know if mine's big enough. And what are some things and home I could use to keep them happy without buying a lot of stuff? I am getting it Monday, so I'm just getting prepared.

You can get a little hide out.( about 3 bucks at petsmart) they love those anytime they feel threatened or just sleepy they will go in those. Have something for them to chew on like wood chips etc* (very cheap around 99 cents) get him things that will help him exercise. I have theses little food balls that they have to work for to get it out. I'm not sure how gerbils and running balls work you should ask your local petsmart or petstore about that. Make sure you have some extra fluffy bedding that your little guy can burrow in, they love this stuff (bed fluff). You may want to even put some little toilet paper rolls in their they are amused by this stuff and plus its harmless for them to chew on it. Let me know how things work with your little guy.

Ps. they have starter cages for about 15 to 20 dollars at your petsmart you may want to look online.

Heres the site for some cheap cages accessories:

and heres the one for cages:

just browse through different pages your bound to find something you like and that is cost effeciant.

toilet paper tubes! They keep gerbils busy.. they love chewing them up and making bedding out of them. If you have a small cardboard box, cut a corner off of it big enough that he can climb into, and put that in there too. He will appriciate having somewhere to hide and sleep. You should only keep him in a plastic or glass cage, because they can and will chew out of anything else... make sure they have very secure screen lids as well, because gerbils are remarkably strong, and can jump very high and very far. Pine shaving bedding is nice, they like that quite a bit.. and its packed tightly so buying the cube of it lasts you quite a few cage changings. Take time to prepare for him, its worth it.

Good previous ideas plus get them a hamster wheel they love to run!!! Also make sure you get 2 males (which have grown up together or they will fight) or two females... If you get one of each you will have 18 or more gerbils in no time!!!!

I would suggest you keep your gerbil in a glass or metal cage. Mine used to chew his way out of his plastic cages. Especially if they were in those cages with the plastic tunnels and such attached.

I used to give my gerbil dryer lint to make a little nest in.
