Laptop runs well at hotels when I'm using wifi to make the connection. I'm using a cable provider for service so it is not as if I were using a dail-up service.

If you have a wireless modem and depending on the range of the wireless someone could be using your wireless connections. That has happened to me. I had to get a smaller wireless modem with a range of under 400 feet.

The internet is bad. The hotel probably uses Dial Up, or Modem, and the service provider is probably really slow, because the hotel wants cheap internet.

The wifi is probably faster, because they have seperate internet connections - 1 for WiFi, and another for land line. The most likely is that the landline is connected to the telephone, which is really slow, around a few kilobytes per second. but the WiFi us probably connected to faster internet, like an actual Ethernet cable. Gasp.

There could be multiple programs talking to the internet on different ports limiting your speed. This is just a hunch, but try disabling some of the devices in your quick launch bar (Next to the time).
Good luck.

Memory won't effect your internet speed (although your cache size may)

Make sure you have optimal settings for browsing the internet (Search for it and you'll find what settings work best for you type of laptop) and also make sure there isn't too much blocking you and your router.
