Depends, because microsoft didnt secure the rights to use the xbox processor in anything besides the original xbox they couldn't make it compatable the easy way, the way sony does with the Playstation so they had to use software emulation which is mch more complex as it requires an emulation patch for each game so they are working towards making them all compatible but at the moment only the most popular games and games that work on similar game engines to the popular games and can therefor use the same emulator work there are 3 ways you can get the emulators you can download them on xbox live , you can download them on your PC and then burn them to disc or you can email microsoft and a disc with the emulator on will be sent to you
a list of which games have emlators is available here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360
and instructions on how to get the emulators are here

http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/games/backwardscompatibility.htm

if your put off becase alot of games aren't compatible check back because microosoft adds new emulators regularly

Very few of them work on the 360, there's a list which other people have already pointed you to, but even some of them on the list don't work properly. Star Wars: Knight of the old republic for instance updates itself, boots up, then freezes and doesn't work every time.

Most games you can, a few of them don't work properly with the emulation in the 360 but I think microsoft are continuing to work on this

yes, but only some of them work. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360 to see the entire list of what games work and which dont. Also, to make them work, you need to have xbox live hooked up and running with a high-speed internet connection.
