Wow, your questions just show you have some real anger issues and no social conscious at all.

No it isn't the worst mistake in history. Do you realize that without it our countries economy would be in some serious trouble? There would be a large collapse and depression when it comes to those who become disabled and can't work (it can happen to anyone, statistically those in their 20-40's are more likely to have a disabling illness or injury than die) and that most senior citizens depend on this money. Be aware anyone can end up needing this help. Pensions and companies go bankrupt and leave you without your retirement earnings you were counting on. Investments can go bad and our economy is vulnerable to this. Do you not remember the late 90's when people lost more than 1/2 of their portfolio's when the stock market fell?

Without social security our economy would be extremely vulnerable and that would effect everyone's financial picture. Do you not remember the depression? The majority of seniors would be out on the street if it weren't for their social security check. Maybe that doesn't mean much to you. But Karma is a b@tch and someday you may not be in the same financial picture you are now. If that happens remember this day and your attitude to mankind!

It was a good idea when it started. Congress has totally F-ed it up since then. Originally, it was voluntary and had an option for private investment (sound familiar?). Over the years, Democratic Congresses have deep-sixed the original plan and made it into what we know and love today. Jimmy Carter put the last nail in its coffin when he allowed illegal immigrants (who haven't paid a dime into the system) to draw social security benefits. When you have to pay out more money than you take in, guess what? you run out of money.

Social Security has been a great success in keeping millions of elderly out of poverty - but I think the 1983 reforms which increased social security taxes on the wages of working people in order to build up a real surplus in the trust fund to help pay for the retirement of the baby boom generation, may have been a mistake. - In hindsight it should have been no surprise that congress wouldn't be able to keep it hands off the surplus and spend it in addition to rather than in place of its regular budget deficits. - Now we have a real problem, because congress has no plan in place to pay it back.

No a much worse mistake is allowing the Constitution to be hijacked by fake conservatives (or neo-cons as they are called here).
A true conservative would never have allowed the abuses of the current administration.

Social Security doesn't even rate in the top 10 mistakes.

Not so sure you can say worst ... it did help get our nation out of a mass depression and until the past few years it hasn't been so bad. It needs to be refined for the times of course but bad isn't the word I'd use.

no, the Iraqi war will probably turn out to be our worst mistake.

as far as social security is concerned, the biggest mistake is the mishandling of its funds by politicians.

I think that honor has and always will go to enslaving Africans and systematically slaughtering native americans. How does paying a little extra tax for granny compare to that?
