The router has both ethernet and wirless PCs working off it, but I can't get the Powerbook to connect. It asks for a password, but the only thing I have is a Wep Key, which it will not take.

Mac's ability to support Wep is pretty kludgy. I guess they don't want to encourage people not to use their lame apple branded wifi gear.

I helped a friend do this with his wifi (his wife has a mac) and the secret turned out to be that the full wep key had to be entered, and indicated as being in Hex format, by specifying a $ before the rest of the key. With that said, that was an old version of Mac OS. Scroll down on the page I linked in source, and it covers this for the mac. Newer versions probably allow you not to have to use the $.

Needless to say, if you can use WPA that's better than Wep. Wep is thoroughly cracked at this point, and while it provides a speed bump, if people really want onto your hotspot, and you're using WEP there are tools that make cracking your Wep key, very feasible.
