After you have gotten a certain number of stars (forget how many, sorry!) you stand on the sun spot in the main lobby of the castle. (there should be a beam of light shining down on it) Stand on the sun and look into the light. You will then be taken to a weird "Castle in the sky" level where you must stomp down on the giant red button for the cap to be unlocked.

when ure in the castle, go into the "lobby" stand in the center circle on the ground and look up, you should be drawn into a level with a flying cap. try to get all the eight red coins for a star however if u want the flying cap unlocked u have to fly onto the castle in the middle. ground pound the red button and all the flying caps will be unlocked. If u can't get into the level, try getting a lot of stars and maybe even beat the first bowser until u see light shining down from the ceiling onto the circle in the lobby. Once the light is there, u will def. be able to go into the level.

it doesn't matter what emulator you're using, you have to be able to use the buttons that allow you to see through mario's eyes. on N64, it was the four C buttons.

when you go into the castle, where you select levels, if the sun is shining on the sun design on the ground, you can access the stage that allows you to free the winged cap

stand on that sun design, and look up at the source of the light. mario will automatically go into the place that has the red button to release the cap, and you'll start the level flying.

i hated the way that mario flies in this game, i'll admit that it was similar to super mario world for snes though, but i would have rathered it was like mario 3...

From outside, go into the castle from the main door. Stand right in the middle of the room and use the up C button t look up at the ceiling. Look at the sun, I think, and it will take you to the level where you can get the winged hat.
