Don't know about NY, but on the west side of Los Angeles there's an area called Mar Vista. Some parts are ok, but some are kind of dangerous. Also there's a part of Venice, west of Lincoln, that is pretty bad.

Living on the westside of Los Angeles is not "bad".
It's affluent---so many celebrities live on the westside--places like Beverly Hills, Malibu, Brentwood, Bel-Air, Holmby Hills, Pacific Palisades, etc.

Dunno bout LA, but NYC is a nightmare, I hate driving alone in that area. Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx.
