I just finished my 3rd semester in college and I did really badly last semester (pretty much all Ds). I know that I'm smart; In high school I had a 3.5 gpa or higher.

I'm finding it very easy to get extremely lazy and to just stop caring in college. Does anybody have any ideas on how I can maintain that drive to do well that I had in high school? Anything at all would be helpful.

By the way, partying is definitely not the problem. I couldn't be less of a partyer.

What kept me motivated was working at a grocery store during the school semester and on breaks. It made me realize that I REALLY didn't want to be forced to do that for the rest of my life. Without that piece of paper that says "college graduate" I knew I would be restricted in my options.
Today with 2 1/2 degrees I can always go back and work at a grocery if I choose, but those pieces of paper also make me eligible to work for NASA or on Wall Street where they won't even look at your resume without that degree.
I know it is hard to stay motivated, but you are in a great position just being at college. Think of what your family is putting into your being there (that was what really turned me around after a bad first year). Just don't give up. It is only 4 (or so) years of your life but it can make all the difference in where you end up. Plan on being lazy AFTER college.

Focus on your goal. Set aside a certain amount of time each day that, short of a fire in the dorm or a bat attack, you will be focused and on-task. At this point, you can repair your GPA but it will take work. And when you go looking for a job or for postgraduate studies, your GPA will count for awhile. You want a good one, especially if you're used to doing well in high school.

Good luck, you can do it!

First of all you have make sure you have picked the right major. Its so boring when you are taking classes you dont enjoy. Second thing is you dont want to overwork yourself. take two academic classes and a class you want. Art or Dance or Physical Fitness, anything that keeps you wanting to come to class. Remember that College is important. It should be your number one priority. Make your plans for the future so you have a goal in mind. College will be the best time of your life. Good Luck.

make study groups, keep an assignment notebook, reward yourself when you do well on something, try to hang out more at school rather than going back to your dorm room as soon as classes are done. study in the library the more often you see class mates studing the more likely you are to keep going. keep up to date with your classes... Keep two notebooks for each class in one notebook write your in class notes and in the other one re write your notes neatly. get a job. realize that your at school to buy an education so dont short change yourself. if your rents are paying for your school...start taking loans so you realize that youll have money to pay back to the government so your degree is a must, if you live on campus move back home if its possible maybe your more likley to study with your parents around, get friends, join activities at school, keep in touch with your professors let them know that your working hard and want to succeed, transfer to a smaller private school if you dont like your current school. if all that fails you need to stop going to school and start working so you can start saving money!
