Silt comes from rivers , lakes , and streams.
Find a body of water and scoop some out and let it dry.

To see how much silt you have, shake it up in a jar of water. The sand settles out in the first few seconds, and you can see the grains. The clay takes days to settle out.

Massive amounts of silt is produced by physical grinding - glaciers mostly - and redistributed by wind. Termed loess deposits, these accumulations of wind deposited material are the best places to get silt dominated soil.

Some areas are famous for their loess: the Palouse wheat growing region in Washington/Idaho, the Loess plateau in China.
Because continental glaciation was so extensive, loess deposits can be found almost anywhere, and most soils have a significant silt component.

On floodplains the silt dominated soil is going to be well away from the stream channel.

To tell silt from clay, this is what they teach in Master Gardener class: Take a sample of soil, and moisten it if it is dry. Put some of it in between your forefinger and thumb, and work your thumb over the top of it with a little pressure. The THEORY is that if it starts to form a thin plastic like layer that works itself away from the area you are rubbing and tends to not fall apart easily, it is clay. Otherwise, it is silt.

My guess would be to check out a local river delta if you're near the coast. If you're not, try finding a creek that runs into a river and you're possibly going to find some where they meet.
