Yeah it depends on where the sound is coming from and what conditions. If its coming from the engine while sitting still and on, check if its from the bottom of the engine.. does it increase with the rpms and get louder? if thats the case then its a rod knock and you have to get the bottom end rebuilt or a used/new one. Sometimes it come be coming from the top where the valves are, that could be your valves need adjusting or if its self adjusting its the lifters and its harmless. If its while driving, especially while turning then its the CV boots on the axles, you can get the whole axles replaced or just the CV boots

A knocking sound from the engine is a warning sign of low to no oil. Make sure your oil is fresh and within spec. Also if you are in a cold climate be carefull to use the proper weight oil in the winter time (heavy oil like 10w30 takes longer to warm up and get splashed around). Sometimes in rare instances if you were parked on a seep incline the oil sloshes back and you can starve a piston. In any event.... check your oil asap.

Youve locked someone in ur boot?? No, just kidding, it means your big ends gone and time for a new motor, thats if you meant the knocking sound was coming from the engine? If not and its coming from the front end only when ur cornering and you have a front wheel drive then it;s your cv joints gone. Cheers

It could be a variety of things. It could be the engine itself, or it could be another loose part. I'd recommend having the car looked at as soon as possible to see what's going on - the sooner the better because in some cases if you let something go it could get worse.

your engine timing could be out- your spark plug is firing to early or late- before the piston reaches top dead centre.
it means that the fuel is exploding before the flame from the spark plug is inginting it- and the shockwave is the knocking sound

could be as simple as a "low octane knock", try using a higher grade of gasoline. Worse case would be a broken valve or piston....

Means you better be checking the oil before you ever drive it again or you'll be throwing a rod.
