I have 1GB of memory and even without opening any applications my RAM is about 41% used.

I have searched for many files from my startup folder and have disabled a few suspicious ones. However, I have only cleared some memory.

I recommend the use of the Windows startup manager http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).

Go through your services and disable those you don't need (you'll need to do some research on this to decide which ones you can/can't disable).

And perhaps try something like MemTurbo?
