most of the answers are good, Front loads are expensive, and any repairs are very expensive. I have a front load washer and am pleased with it's function so far they have a life of about 11 years and the dryers slightly longer. When I replace mine it will be with a top load Fisher Packyl. This is an expensive choice but the repairs are very simple and far less expensive than the front load. The Washer has no transmission and very few moving parts. They are comparable to the front loads in water consumption and efficiency. The Dryer is even a top load, Take a look I think you will be most pleased. The new units even interact with each other, the washer will communicate drying information to the dryer. The Whirlpool Casio is made by these people as is the top of the line Kenmore. Fisher Packyl has got it together.

Sometimes, despite the best maintenance practices, owners of energy-efficient, water-saving front-loading models may have been unexpectedly disappointed with their machines dying early. More often, its cause could be a defective bearing sometimes. So if you will soon be looking for a full range of bearings and seal sets available for your front load washer to keep it healthy, happy & longer lasting

I have a Maytag Neptune front load washer and dryer. They are now about 8 years old and we've had no major problems. A seal in the washer had to be replaced, that was a recall and we were not charged for it. My husband had to replace a barring in the dryer. The part cost about $28. They work wonderfully. The dryer dries very quickly. It is much easier to load and unload the laundry compared to our old top loader. I wish they would have had the cool colors and platforms that they now have. Check out Consumer Reports at your public library to see what they recommend.

i agree, check consumer reports. that said, my sister got the maytags and has had some issues with them. for one, during the summer when the power load is high, her dryer wouldn't work because it was 'too' smart to start. the washer had a recall and some other thing also. this in less than two years, you have the grief now, why spend $2,000., it's not better! maybe maytag will get better now that whirlpool bought them, let's hope. that said, a friend has the whirlpool washer and has had great luck with it. i would tell you to check out whirlpool or bosch. both are good names if you can get good service where you live.

I have seen some stacking front-loading washers and dryers that genuinely ARE junk. But if you can get some good ones, they can be very good because you don't have to balance the load and you generally can use less detergent.

We had the Maytag Neptune front load washer. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!! We replaced them with KENMORE version of the WHIRLPOOL DUET. Love, Love Love them. Ours is the Kenmore HE3t, they're now up to the He5t, somewhat pricey but you save so much in detergent and softener. Whirlpool/Kenmore frontload washers are mfg in Germany, those folks are not fond of using bleach in the wash their washers in general are awesome and their whites are amazingly whiter than ours in the US
And always check out Consumer Reports.

I have neptunes and love them, however I have seen reports that the washer gets black mold. I've also washed a comforter in the washer and wore a hole through the rubber seal near the door twice. It had to be replaced both times. it wasn't a huge comforter, it just got off balance. the repair man said it was strange, and I'll continue to wash comforters and pillows if I need to, he said to just wash them completely alone. good luck
