Guppies and zebra danios are frequently used as "test" fish because of their ease and speed of reproduction.

The speed of evolution depends on the variability of the species. Highly variable species evolve quickly, while those with low variability evolve slowly. The "emergence" of a new species is a completely arbitrary decision, because at no point can one say that a given individual is of a different species than its parents. But there are a number of ring species in which the line is so arbitrarily drawn now, one would be hard pressed to say whether it's one species or two. The observed rate of phenotype change in some Galapagos finches, seen in response to climate change, is between 10,000 and 40,000 times faster than the overall rate of change seen in the vertebrate fossil record. So yes, it can happen quickly.

Got to a Walmart Supercenter or a pet store. Look for the fattest guppy female and buy it. Although, out of experience an average swordtail gives you more fry than a guppy. If you want cheaper fish get a platy, or a molly but make sure they are females, because there are alot of fat males out there.

Definitely go to the pet store and buy a dozen feeder guppies. It'll cost you about a buck. They can breed a new generation in 6-8 weeks with some TLC. Of course tobacco may stunt their growth! ;-)

i would agree with guppies.. or zebra danios.. they're egg scatterers unlike guppies where they give birth to live fries..

just be careful if you're going to inject tobacco extract/juice into the aquarium... nicotine is a poison and fish are very sensitive. Measure your doses in milligrams.

Obviously, you're going to need a lot of tanks.. a control, with nothing in it.. and a whole bunch with different doeses..
