yes, you can have an epidural before your water breaks, but most doctors won't give you one until you're at least 3 cm dilated, because epidurals have a tendency to sometimes slow down labor, which if that happens to you, they'll probably want to break your water for you and possibly start pitocin to get you going again.

How far dilated are you? You can have a epidural at 3 centimeters and as far as 8. It doesnt matter if your water breaks or not , with my son my water didnt break until I was pushing. They usually break your water to speed up the labour process but its not a necessary thing. Good Luck to you and your baby

Let them break your water. They won't give you that epidural until it's broken. Also, though, it will speed up labor. It will hurt more, too.
Tell them to break your water. You'll hurt some for a couple of hours, but then, they will give you the epidural.

My Dr. would not give me an epidural until I was dilated to a 5.

My water didn't break... I was well into active labour and had my epidural when they broke it for me. If you're in active labour now... I don't think you'll make it until New Years.
