It's atcully called a desktop cause thats where they envisioned people placing them.

the monitor screen is called the desktop. it was given the name by bill gates and other people who developed the software. it was supposed to be reminiscent of the actual desktop that has papers, pens, and other tools and documents on it. it was something to make you more comfortable with the new way of working...on the computer. it seems strange to us, but when windows first came out, it was revolutionary.

The screen is called the desktop. It is called the desktop becuase it is supposed to be like the top of a normal desk found in any office. On a desktop in most offices, you will find files, folders, calculator, etc., just like you find in your virtual desktop.
