you have probably downloaded a virus of some sort or it could be malware or spyware.

the best thing you could do if you don't want to lose info is to run antivirus checks like "spybot search and destroy" but since its new and you probably don't have too much stuff on it what you could do to make sure you get rid of the virus is just reload the entire OS (operating system) with the restore disks that came with it and if not then just use a standard XP disk

make sure you delete the original partition before you reinstall the new OS
infact if it would be easiest to just follow these steps.

1.at the POST screen (the one with all the numbers) at startup press the button required to enter setup

2.on the tab tahat says "advanced bios features" or something simmilar change your boot preferences so that 1=CD-ROM/DVD-ROM

3.restart your computer

4.insert the XP disk

5.if the computer says press any key to boot from disk then do so

6.a blue screen should pop up with a list of options

7. follow the promts to install windows

8.when a screen appears that lists the previous copy of windows continue to install a new copy

9.when your harddisk is listed there should be an existing partition delete this partition

10.create a new partition

you should be alright from there

and PS after you install windows go back to the bios setup and set it back to failsafe defaults.

good luck :-)

Sometimes they can get pretty slow. Here are some things you can quickly do.

If you have a lot of icons on your desktop, get rid of as many of them as you can. They can slow down bootup among other things.

Download AVG anti virus for free
Download Zone-Alarm Firewall for free
Download SpyBot Search and Destroy for free

You can also try this:

Start>>run>>type "msconfige.exe"

Go to the startup tab, and you will see all the programs that will startup at bootup time. You can uncheck all the programs that you don't want to start up.

Becareful though. There are some things that must remain checked because the system needs it. Odds are if you don't recogonize the name, leave it checked.

I hope this helps.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html
