As far as I know, gift cards do not cost anything. You only pay the amount you want put on the gift card.

The cards are generally without any charge. Banks and stores love to have gift cards (which are actually another form of pre-paid debit cards) in circulation because
1) They have the money up front and draw interest on it while the card is in someones pocket
2) Statistics show that between 10 to 15% of all cards are never fully redeemed.. (More money in the banks pocket)
3) Once in the store most people will buy other things that exceed the cost of the card (the other 85% of the people)
Soooooo.. with that motivation and $$$ profit, banks and stores virtually give them away (a lot of stores will add a few bucks to cards now and then as an inducement to buy them).
Soo.. no charge to get a card... but giving cash or a check gets more money to the receipient.

It costs the amount you are purchasing for the gift. A $25 gift card costs $25. etc.
