Head over to your Borders/Barnes & Noble and take a look at the Player's Handbook (PHB) , found by comic books and fantasy section. You only need the PHB 3.5 and it will cost you about $30.00 ($20.00 if you look around on amazon, walmart or e bay).

You'll also need a set of dice (can be found in hobby shops) which includes various sided dice. These are about $5 to $7. From there, you should get a "module" which is basically like an adventure thats been already written for you. You should purchase one for first level characters (found in same section in the bookstore) or download some from the link below. You don't need to get the other two core books Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster's Manual right away, but they will be handy to have. D&D is every inexpensive and you pay based on whenever you get interested in something else, not every time you play.

You'll need at least one other person to play with who has at least a set of dice, but its best with at least three people. While it might be nice to play with someone who has experience, it may be hard to find other players in your area. Check message boards at wizards.com and enworld.org to see who's in your area.

The only other thing else you need is paper and pencils, and eventually you can buy other books, minis and/or maps.

Its a low maintenance game that can easily pass the time away. Hope you enjoy the game and have fun.

About £9 a month, and it isn't worth it in my opinion.

Purchase NeverWinter Nights and/or NeverWinter Nights 2, (NWN1 is available in several bundle forms now), it's a lot more expansive, is pretty much the same game, (they're both made by BioWare), and NWN is free online, and you can even make your own EVERYTHING; characters, weapons, items, levels, sounds....
