A logbook is a written record of what has happened. A ships log book details the ships course, speed, etc. and other interesting details involving the ship. Its done on a daily basis with entries logged at the time they happen. Course change, speed change, drills, emergencies, etc.
You can have a 'logbook' for anything. A more common example is a diary - which is just a logbook in which you record things that interest you, usually with daily entries.

A Logbook is a book for recording readings from the log.
The log was (maybe it is still) used to determine the distance a ship traveled within a certain amount of time. The readings of the log have been recorded in equal times to give the distance traveled with respect to a given start position.

The log book I am familiar with is for commercial truck drivers ( this is my profession) It is to keep track of how far, long and fast a truck driver has been driving. The rules differ if there are 2 or only 1 driver in the truck.A single driver can not work over 12 hours in a day with the exception of 1 day a week he/she may drive 14 hrs. They must have 10 hrs.off before starting again and 36 hours off after 60 hours in a week.Hope this helps!

There are many types of log books. The two that I know about and why they are used is:
Truckers Log Book. That is to record how many hours you traveled and how many hours you are stopped in a given time frame. You are only allowed to drive so many hours then you have to take a break for so many hours.
Aircraft Log Book: That is to record how many hours and the date you are actually running the engine on an airplane as to determine certain times to perform certain maintenance operations on the aircraft.
Both are used by the State and Federal Governments as proof that you are joining them in a conspiracy to join them in violating your Constitutional Rights of Privacy under the 4th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
It also helps them to determine the amount of fine if your Logs are not in order.

The 'logbook' is now a single sheet of paper noted as a V5. it remains standard as a 'logbook', through fact some years in the past it replaced into actually a small e book, which saved a log of each and every of the motor vehicle's previous vendors.

There are many types of log books, depending on what the person needs to record. It got its name from thin shingles of wood that were used before paper on ships. It is to record the necessary details of what ever the operation is. For a trucker mileage is needed, times, cargo, weight, truck checks for safety.
For a ship tides are needed, weather, mileage, time, sea conditions, watch schedule, etc.
