Alexei Leonov was one of the first group of Russians selected as cosmonauts. His first spaceflight was in Voskhod 2 with Pavel Belyayev. Voskhod was a variation of the one-man Vostok craft of the type that Yuri Gagarin flew in, but modified to carry a multi-person crew. The Soviet Premier, Nikita Kruschev, knew that America planned a series of missions using their two-man Gemini spacecraft, starting in the Spring of 1965. He ordered that before the USA launch a two-man craft, the USSR should launch a three-man craft. Sergei Korolev, the Soviet's "Chief Designer", was actually designing such a vehicle - Soyuz - but it would not be ready until 1967. The only way that room could be made for 3 seats inside a modified Vostok would be if the cosmonauts did not wear spacesuits! This great risk was one of the factors that led to Voskhod being referred to as "Kruschev's Folly", and when I visited the Soviet space pavilion in Moscow in 1976 there was no display or mention of Voskhod.
It was also known the the USA intended to carry out Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) during the Gemini project, so it was decided that the second Voskhod mission would include the first Soviet EVA.
Voskhod 2, with Leonov and Belyayev, was launched on March 18, 1965. With Gemini, the craft was depressurised and the EVA astronaut swung open his hatch to exit the vehicle. With Voskhod, an inflatable airlock was set up on the outside of the spacecraft, Leonov entered it and the hatch was shut behind him. The airlock was then depressurised and the outer hatch opened. The offical report said that Leonov spent 20 minutes outside the spacecraft, but in fact he spent about 10 minutes on the planned EVA tasks, and a further 10 trying to get back in. In the vacuum of space his suit had expanded more than expected and he had great difficulty in getting back into the airlock. Eventually he took the extreme risk of reducing the pressure in his space-suit. This let him squeeze through the hatch, but he could have suffered the "bends" as a result; fortunately he didn't.
There were no more Voskhod flights. America then flew 10 Gemini missions during 1965 and 1966, before moving on to Apollo.
If the Soviets had been successful in their plans for landing men on the Moon, it is most likely that Leonov would have commanded the first landing.
He did fly once more as commander of the Soviet half of the Apollo-Soyuz Test project in 1975, when American and Soviet spacecraft docked in orbit for the first time.
Leonov is also a very talented artist, and his paintings depict the great beauty and wonder of the exploration of space.
