When i rented a movie a month ago, they said i owed them for an overdue dvd. I told them that i already returned it 2 months ago. I went back a couple of days later to talk to the manager, but she was at lunch. The corporate office (or whoever) sent me a card stating that i need to return the movie.

Some people told me that the overdue fee would be high (like $100), because they could claim possible lost of revenue (other people could be renting this movie). But, isn't that illegal (that's why BlockBuster got sued)? Will this stupid thing ruin my credit? Can i buy this movie from somewhere else and just give it too them?

Thanks in advance.

Not all of that is entirely true. First of all a movie that is kept for a very loing time if returned will show a large late fee. But usually before that it gets turned over to a collection agency. When it goes to the collection agency its usually around 50 or 60 dollars to get everything settled.
What I would suggest is to go back when the manger is there and have them loacte the barcode number from your account and go look for the title with them. Hopefully it is somewhere in the store and tey resolve the issue for you. If the movie is not there then what the S.D. should do is offer to do rental sale.
With rental sales you check in the movie as an FOS(found on shelf) and then sell that product to you at a previously viewed price, which at the most will prbably be $14.99(if its a new release). Hopefully then the S.D. will void the fees on the account.
Sadly this does happen.
Please have patience and be polite with the Manager simply because by having this attitude towards them then you should leave happy. From years of customer service experience its the nice customers who reap the benifits and the rude one that get the hard time if anything. I wish everyone would realize that.

good Luck

Not nessisarrily illegal, the terms of your account membership (you signed a form when you started the account) stated that the "Additional rental" fees would apply to any overdue rental.

What an additional rental is is that after a movie is past its due date it is automatically re-rented onto your account for an additional 5 days.

If you had in-fact returned the item already,... ask the manager on duty if they can bring up your account to see the title in question. and ask for its barcode #. Look in the store for this item with that specific barcode (perhaps with their help). If found what they should do is perform an "FOS"/VRE form (Found on Shelf).

I hope this helps.

*You may be able to purchase a PV copy of the title if it is lost,... but depending on the individual store manager... the late fees may still not be voided.

I used to work at Blockbuster and we would only charge the cost of the movie... Not sure how hollywood video works. But if you go to the store manager and talk to her she might be able to just cancel it out. It happens I've seen movies that were "never returned" sitting on the shelves at blockbuster. If she can't help you call the corporate office and see what they will do... I doubt they would be willing to lose you as a customer over a movie that probably costs $20.

It's illegal to overcharge you for the price of the movie. If you really returned it I would fight them. I would tell them see you in court and get a lawyer. Something like this happened to me when Blockbuster said I rented Armageddon and I clearly did NOT and so the girl was pushy saying that's what the computer said, but I yelled at her and told her I wanted to see her manager and long story short I was just as pushy & they understood I didn't rent it. It must have been a glitch. All I'm saying is fight it if you know you are right.

This happened to me and I went to the shelf and brought the movie I was supposed to still have had up to the counter, so I would first check the shelf. Hollywood video charges the rental fee over if it is past the 5 day mark. so if it is 3 weeks late it would be 3.79 times 3 , at least thats how it works here.

I thought that you could only be charged up to a certain amount in late fees (not to exceed the amount that you could purchase the movie), and if you have lost the movie, they can charge you the retail amount for the movie.
Go back in and speak to the manager, see if you can work something out. Good Luck
