One cleans and the other softens fabric and keeps static cling down. Be aware that fabric softeners can also reduce the effectiveness of chemicals used to make clothes less flammable, too, so you might want to keep that in mind if you smoke or are around fire. You don't really need to use a fabric softener but it's nice on some things.

You put detergent in at the beginning to clean your clothes. You use fabric softener in the final rinse to soften your clothes or you can buy the sheets and throw them in your dryer to do the same thing.

detergent lossens up dirt and grease particles. It's what cleans your clothes. Fabric softener is fabric softener. Use only fabric softner and you'll end up with nice, soft, dirty clothes.

Detergent has soap in it and it gets the dirt and grime out of your clothes. Fabric softener softens your clothes so they don't come out so stiff.

The widespread use of fabric softeners in conjunction with modern detergents in the home has led to concerns that they may cause adverse skin reactions, particularly on infants and those with sensitive skin. It has been determined that the use of fabric softeners is not a cause of infant dermatitis (‘nappy rash’) (Jenkins et al, 1983; Schneider et al, 1974; Steinbock and Swoboda, 1974; Motegi et al, 1974; Bouchier-Hays, 1988). But recently more detailed work on the specific effects on the skin has shown that Lenor from Procter and Gamble has no adverse effects, and indeed its use has some measurable benefits.
