I dont know how to install ubuntu 6.10 from os x 10.3 I would really appreciate help

When I hit enter or type install I see the umbuntu loading screen and then soon after that I hear this jungle sound but see nothing but black on the screen is that normal?

When I booted ubuntu 6.10 from cd I typed instal and it came up with this message
Please wait loading kernel....
install:2/vmlinux:unable to open file invalid device.
Is there anything I can do because im dying to see umbuntu on my imac. Thanks alot.

You can't install from Panther. You have to boot up the computer with the install cd.At the prompt,(booting from cd boots in SU mode) type either "live" or "install" Live will let you try it out without installing it. Typing install will re-format the hard drive and install Ubuntu.
