I had to work from 6 am to 2 pm today. A coworker who I don't like called in sick and I was asked if I could work another 8 hours. I told them I had plans with my brother. Do you think I did the right thing? I had already did my eight hours and was too tired to work another 8, plus I had to come right back in to work at 6 am tomorrow.

If you really didn't want to work anymore then saying no is fine. I do that quite a bit in my job when someone is unable to see a client. Sometimes I say yes but there are plenty of times when I just need some free time for other things I was planning to do. I don't feel guilty since I've already committed myself to working every other weekend. If a scheduler really begs me to do an extra shift after trying everyone else then yes I will generally agree to it unless I really do have important plans or an appointment.

I am a home support worker.

If you didnt want to work, then you dont have too. I know from experiance that working 16 hour shifts and then coming back in the next morning sucks.

You have no obligation to work beyond your normal shift and should never be punished for doing so. It's the weekend and you should totally enjoy your life. 16 hours is ridiculous with less than 8 hours of sleep and downtime inbetween.

I don't think it would be legal to work all those hours, depending upon what kind of work you do. Yes, you did the right thing.

Why feel guilty? You put in your time, and it isn't your place to fill in for other people. When I worked outside the home, I had to find a replacement when I didn't go in. Enjoy your time away f/ the salt mines. :)

Yes. You wouldn't be doing anyone a favor if you were too tired to do your job right.
