How to burn movies to a DVD-R?

ok, i've "supposedly" converted the movie into a DVD format but everytime i want to burn it, it says that there is no disk. i put a DVD-R disk but it's not working. can't i use this disk? plz i need help!!!! idk how many times i've converted it & it doesnt work!!!! thxs =]

i've downloaded the movie from limewire
& i've used the program ConvertXToDVD & AVS Video Converter 5.5
my computer is hp pavilion a646c

use a dvd+r
