I want an electric guitar. Im looking for something in the 500 range(up to 100 more). Ive heard that gibsons and fenders(the top name brands) can be overpriced AND overrated. So Im willing to buy another brand thats quality and dependable. Ok maybe its not a gibson les paul, but something decent.
Are Hamers or Ibanez's any good? I saw a couple online (double cuts) that looked really cool.
I would like a double cut type, not like a heavy metal type guitar, and not like a fender shaped. something looking more like a gibson double cut.
Thanks for the help!

One of the best products for around $500 US in electric guitar is the little kown GODIN electric..

They are a Canadian company who hand craft all their instruments.. and only use good quality parts and materials.. THey also produce the well known Seagull range of accoustics which cna be priced over $5000 for one guitar..

Their foray into electrics is not as oustanding.. BUT they have an awsome range.. and they are as good as any Gibson or Fender for the price.. in fact for the price they are much better because they are not so commercial so you're not having to pay extra for their advertising..

I bought one.. purely coz i was at a gig and heard another performer play a multilac.. so I went and bought one myself.. proof was in the pudding and i am stoked.. I will release my first album with this guitar..

Also look at jackson and yamaha electrics.. jackson if you favor a more heavy metal type sound.. Godins are more of a bluesy type sound.. bit like the fat sounding mastersound.. not quite as fat as a top line Gibson.. but then that would cost 10 times what I paid for my Godin..

It's actually different strokes for different folks. Go to a music store and start trying out guitars. Compare the prices, the action of the neck, how heavy it is, and how do the pickups sound. Is the neck straight? Also check on warranties and whether the guitar come with a case (a case is a lot better than a gig bag) or will you have to buy one. Most guitar makers have lower and higher end models. Gibson and Fender are the most popular. So this would really depend on you. Make sure you don't pick a guitar because of it's shape.....pick a guitar out because of its workmanship, quality, and sound. If this will be your first electric, then go low end. You may even want to check around in some pawn shops....I've gotten great deals out of pawn shops. As you progress further, then you may want to consider buying a high end guitar. My reccommendation for that would be Carvin (www.carvin.com). Best of luck with your choices.

I a ma Fender man myself, but I have a schecter that with some decent strings sounds great. It's stratesque, so if you don't want a Fender shape, your SOL, but it's $300 and sounds pretty darn good. If you want a double-cut les paul look, then I know Ibanez makes a semi-hollow that sounds ok (my friend had one), but I don't know what the price was.

Shecter and godin have very nice high end models I dont know anyone who plays any of there base line guitars. Ibanez is amazing for the price. Hammer sux tone is way off on any of them I have ever picked up. Carvin guitar are also really nice. Epiphone is ok, squire has always felt cheep in my hands I don;t like them.

Personally I'm in love with my guitar but like you said you may not want to buy a fender.... I have a strat but what I did with my strat I really really really loved it sounds great, feels great, and was faily inexpensive... I bought a mexican strat. Strats are more expensive when they are american made becuase they have better quality, time put into them. But you can change that. I bought a fender strat with a 70's neck style on it.. ( slightly different i believe it is thicker) and I love it! I also changed the pickups. You can get almost any guitar you want and make it your sound to putting in different pickups. I put in vintiger pickups ( ledzepplin style antique style nice) in the neck picups and i put a seymore duncan in the bridge ( like a humbucker but singlecoil its like a minutre) So i can get the grungy sound on the last switch and I can get the nice classical sound on the first couple neck switches. It's perfect i love my guitar and mexican strats run from 300-600 I think? I havn't really looked for years now since I love my guitar. I also used to have a schecter which i really really really loved. I had one of the crappy ones since I was just starting out but i really loved that thing if you want to go more distortion style those are wonderful. I recommend the C1 Classic my dad had one and it is beautiful, elegant and not highpriced and sounds great!!! Find something that feels right to you when you play it I recommend going to a guitar shop or guitar center and playing different guitars. You can't just shop online for a guitar. You have to feel and decide what is best for your playing. Sure you can grow to love a guitar and grow to feel right but its better to make sure you like it first. I had an american strat with a different neck on it and I could not play it! welli could literally I just didn't enjoy it. It was way more expensive then my old schecter but I would negelct to play the fender because I just hated the feeling. Also korean guitars are the bomb... Ibenez is good just don't get a floyd rose I believe thats what its called. It makes it way hard to tune and if you go to drop D to regular tuning it can get a ***** or if you tune your guitar different often. I know you don't want fender and yes they can be overpriced and crap but i'm just letting you know what I had. Go to musiciansfriend.com and subscribe to their magazine for free they have tons of guitars with pretty decent prices. tons of different brands... subscription if free.... gets delivered to your house tons of choices and guitars to look through. Good luck message me if I can help more. I'm not guitar expert i've only been playing for 3 years but I know a bit so feel free to message or email me good luck
