Wow, my kind of man! I hate having to shave them! It is in my opinion more attractive to shave them, but hell... he wants what he wants. Also, I remember seeing a picture of Julia Roberts and she had hairy pits......

The Mack Sennett answer is likely--movies had (and have) a strong influence on popular culture, as when undershirt sales plummeted after Clark Gable didn't wear one in It Happened One Night. I've read that before 1915, prostitutes were the group known for shaving. The chief reasons women shave are aesthetics, smell, and custom. Hairy armpits on an otherwise groomed woman, especially when she's wearing something like a sleeveless ballgown, look unkempt, unsophisticated, and earthy--a more hippy look than generally desired. If they're wet with sweat, even worse. Hair also traps smell, so you 're going to have more BO if you're unshaven. And third, culturally there's a EWWW factor--we're just not used to seeing it. Shaving the legs is done strictly for aesthetic reasons--hair under nylons gets all bunched up and ruins the sleek look of the leg, and long, dark leg hair looks masculine. The aesthetics have a lot to do with achieving an illusion of maximal youthfulness, as cited by some here. Women generally like to look fresh and girlish, and certainly don't want to invite comparisons with an old, hairy guy.

Who cares why, as long as they did. Hmmm I am not sure why I have such a problem with a girl having armpit hair, but I do. If I was in bed with a woman and she had hair in her armpits or on her legs like I do. I would get right out of bed, put on my clothes and leave. Ughh, I would be so turned off hehe. Hell I don't even like it when they don't shave or at least trim their pubic hair, very close. How come some women have no problem shaving their armpits and legs yet won't even go close the pubic area with a razor?

To my knowledge it has already gone out of fashion to an extent in europe.
I don't understand why you are being bashed like this. I prefer to not shave my arm pits because it uncomfortable for several days afterwards due to tiny cuts and itchiness of hair growing back. Not to mention that you must to it regularly to keep the hair gone. Admittedly, I prefer to feel of smooth skin, but that means that every once in a while I shave it off for a few weeks. Most of the time I just keep it trimmed. Men's deodorant tends to favor such choices, because men in general do not shave their arm pits. Women do not find this offensive, however, which I see as rather odd.

Women shaving their armpits is an American trait. Most women in other countries don't shave their armpits, and think American women are awkward for doing so. My guess would be that armpit shaving became popular in the 1920's with "glamour" era.
here's a great website about it:

It's actually more comfortable to shave than not to. Especially in the summer when it is really hot. You tend to sweat more which can cause irritation and rashes. When you shave you get rid of the hair which makes application of deoderants easier.
You have to wonder as to why men have this kind of fetish. Do they like women who do not wash?

icky.. why do you want it to go out of fashion? I live in a college town that is known for its "natural" women.. and I am personally sick of seeing women who dont shave their pits.. or legs.. and parade around in tank tops and shorts all summer long. Not to mention, half of them are anti- antipersperant because they claim it causes cancer..
Id personally rather not be hairy and stink. If you like Hairy women, move to the Western Washington University campus

I started shaving my pits two yrs ago because it was hard to put deodorant. I think it is absolutely disgusting if you don't! And if you don't shave your pits you will stink because the deodorant wipes off.
In answer to your question it appears they started shaving their pits in 1915, or there about. Anyway we've been shaving so long it would be hard to go back now!
