I'm a senior security professional with over 25 years experience, have supported many business networks and as a result have run most major antivirus offerings through their paces. While there is no such thing as a perfect antivirus program, the best "free" application I've seen in recent years is AVG, which can be found at www.grisoft.com. They DO have a free version for home use, you'll have to dig around on their site to find it.

That being said, there are other programs that are quite good, if not equally so. Kaspersky is an excellent choice, but I'm not certain if they offer a free version for home use. Something I can say with absolute certainty are two antivirus programs to avoid at all costs -- free or not, I would never recommend McAfee or Symantec. Of those two, Symantec is probably the better at zapping viruses and some malware, but both of them are absolutely terrible for the performance of your computer.

Good luck!

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.

AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Firewalls commonly cause problems. AVG is the best and its free anti-spyware partner is just as good for fighting spyware. Check them out as well as other the free security software on the following page:

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

download firefox for free, Just have a try:

I like AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)

And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

avg is 1 of the best. norton is 1 of the absolute worst. norton doesnt detect worms or trogans, and those 2 make up the bulk of the virus attacks.
