I draw portraits with charcoal pencil based on photos, and I mail them to the customer when they are done. I get steady business on eBay, and I am going to put up fliers. I'm wondering what type of publications might be best for advertising that wouldn't be expensive, and would target the right people.

I was in the very same business for a while but it was extremely difficult to market the product. The main problem is that customer referrals were very small, they were getting more and more when we stopped but basically all was new generated business.

Here is how I did it. 1, go to children's nurseries/pre school, photograph all the kids and draw all of them. Take all the drawings back and see what sells. The return rate varied amazingly, some nurseries it was 60% and others it was as low as 30%. The nursery gets 10% of what you sell.

2 Alternatively, leave flyer's in kids nurseries. That generated 1 or 2 per month, per nursery.

3. Leave flyer's in dog kennels.

4 Caricatures - do 'Live' caricatures on holidays, weddings, parties etc..

In the end I gave it up and when back to accountancy. All the market research I did indicated that there was a market for the product, the feedback was excellent but it was difficult to get the orders in. I worked long hours marketing and drawing and although the experience was great I never really made profits in excess of GBP1,000 per month.

Good luck

You might want to consider doing freebies (marketing). Do local politicians or local tv celebrities or anyone else who has the ego to be impressed with seeing a drawn picture of themself. If you're good, they'll be impressed and word gets out. If you're mediocre, it's practice that you need to get better. Depending how serious you are about the business, you may be able to get a tax write off for the marketing (consult a tax preparer).

What I suggest (I'm a painter) is to create your own web site.
