They are. My 2005 Impala has auto headlights. They turn on by themselves when it gets dark. When I turn off my car, they turn off automatically. I never have to turn them on manually.

Some of the newer vehicles do have an automatic position so the headlights will come on at dark with the ignition on, and turn off after a certain time has passed after the ignition is off. But they also have an over ride on and off position. There are times you will want your ignition on without your lights on, or your lights on with the ignition on. When you open the doors it will chime to warn you if you happen to leave them on accidentally.

Although superficially this would seem like an excellent feature (no dead batteries!) It could also create a potential hazard. Say, if for some reason your engine cuts out while driving on the highway at night, cars behind you could become oblivious to your position and a collision might ensue.

Some newer cars have the lights turn off a few minutes after the engine.

I don't know why you don't know the answer to your question but they have been making cars this way for several years....Hello!

FYI many cars have a light switch on the dash that has 4 settings, 1. OFF....2. Parking Lights....3. Head lights on and number 4...Automatic. You can turn the light switch to the automatic mode and the lights will stay lit for several seconds after you exit the car.
They will automatically turn on as you start or drive the car if conditions warrant them coming on and all this happens automatically. Cars now have many new great features, you ought to visit a dealer and find out about them, you may buy one.

Because it is possible that you may want them on. My 1993 car has quite a sophisticated headlight-ignition control. You can:
- Turn off the headlights before turning off the ignition. Everything goes off.
- Turn off the headlights after turning off the ignition. The headlights stay on for one minute, then shut off. This lets you see your way into the house.
- Turn the headlights on with the ignition off. The lights will stay on indefinitely, if you need the illumination for some reason.

You may need the headlights without the ignition being on. You never want to keep just the ignition on without the engine running.
