It seems that you cannot please people when it comes to Christmas. I work in a small retail store that sells fine jewelry and gifts as well as accessories. Lately we have been getting Christmas returns. The store policy is exchanges only. It just seems that people cannot be pleased with the gifts they receive. I could understand if they got clothes that didn't fit but be happy with your gift. If I get something I don't like I politely smile and say thank you. I would never think of saying "It's not me, can I have the receipt". Some people really go out of their way to try make people happy and can't. I am not a religious person but Christmas has just turned ito this commercial fiasco where people run around trying to please people with expensive gifts that they end up hating anyway.

Isn't Christmas Christ BIRTHDAY?

If so, why are they giving presents to EACH OTHER instead of to Jesus??

Inside, maybe they know they are little cheats, eh???

I see what you're saying and it does seem selfish to return an item. I've had a lot of "bad gifts" that I donate. When I receive them I grin and bear it and thankfully accept it. I appreciate their gesture but refuse to keep unwanted items to pacify their egos. I think to buy a gift, you should really know a person enough to consider things they need or like because, ultimately it goes up for return, up for donation or kept out of guilt. I think we should just banish the gift exchange or invest gift money in something the family can do together over the holidays like a board game or movie passes. Family time is the most over looked gift of all.

Christmas has become way too commercialized. It is all about what you want and who gets the most of what everyone else wanted. When our kids return to school after Christmas break what is the first thing they are asked to tell about or write about? WHAT DID YOU GET FOR CHRISTMAS?? Going through the checkout lines of a store recently, the cashier wants to know what my daughter got for Christmas!

Your last sentence answers your own question! After you buy the same person gift after gift for numerous made up occassions.....you finally get tired of shopping, buy ANYTHING and say "Hey, if they don't like it, they can return it."

Mentality instilled from one generation to the next!

We have solved the problem in our family by two different ways. First of all, although it spoils the surprise element, we simply ask eachother what we would like. If it's clothing -- the brand name, the size, color, etc. Another, simpler method is to give everyone gift cards or money. Granted, it takes the fun out of buying and anticipating the recipient's reaction, but it also saves guesswork, a lot of returns, disappointments and waste of money, and fighting the crowds or trying to find parking places. I highly recommend this method, especially when family members live out of town. Just make sure that the gift cards you purchase have those particular stores in that person's area.
