I THINK IT WAS USED TO OVER-POWER THE SMELL OF MANURE

Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh were the three gifts the Wisemen (also called The Three Kings or Magi) brought from the East to celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus (Matthew 2:11). Though many people have heard of Frankincense and Myrrh and have even sung about them in Christmas carols, few have actually seen, let alone owned, these precious substances. Frankincense and Myrrh are aromatic resins extracted from rare trees. Frankincense, an almost white resin, was one of the most prized and costly substances in the ancient world, worth more than its weight in gold. It was used in medicines and incense (Exodus 30:34). Myrrh, a dark resin, was widely used in perfumes, incense and embalming. Gold has been long valued due to its beauty and resistance to corrosion. It has been used in jewelry and commerce for thousands of years.

They would all three be used throughout his life. Frankincense would be burned to announce the baby. Gold would be wealth in life. Myrh would be a balm used on the body in death.

In truth, myrh smells. Bad. It can overpower the smell of a rotting corpse in nothing flat. Franincense is musky and sweet. Something to be used as a blessing.

Frankincense burned to alert people they were in the presence of the Holy One or on sacred ground-like temple..

Myrrh used to anoint the Holy of Holy one...Anointed one.

Gold: gold would have been used to cover a small wooden altar-to burn Frankincense on.. (thin sheet of gold to cover wooden type altar or a small gold shape altar already made as gift)

remember the ark of the covenant--was wood--covered with thin sheet of beaten gold..

another thought: this gold then could have been used to help pay for trip to Egypt--they had to get away from Old King Herod.

The wise men were priest-kings of the Zoroastrian religion. The gifts were used for divination. If the baby took the gold, it showed he was a king. If he took frankincense it showed he was a priest. If he took myrrh, it showed he was a physician. Jesus took all three, but ignored the iPod nano and Nintendo Wii.

Although Jesus had just been born, the three gifts given by the three kings were to be used after his crucfixion. The Frankinsence was lit and left nto buirn in the cave.

Obviously, when someone dies, as the body breaks down it starts to smell. This would be used to disguise the smell.

Or gold or Myrhh, for that matter? Traditionally, the 3 gifts were to represent 3 things
Gold - that Jesus was a king
Frankincense - this was burned as offerings to God - hence, he was divine
Myrhh - This was used in burial services at the time (the body was wrapped in it) and is seen as a foreshadowing of the child's eventual death.

The gifts of the kings were very valuable. In addition to forseing his death, they had great monetary value and could be sold to meet the famiy's financial needs at the time. People today often give savings bonds or start a savings account for a newborn.

Those gifts from the wise men were for the parents. Baby Jesus would have been happier with a rattle or a pacifier.
