I was on the shot for almost 5 years along with a few friends of mine. We all put on weight. One friend put on close to 30 lbs. One of my friends ended up being put on hormones because the shot was pretty much putting her into menopause. One friend bled non stop while on it. I had to quit because it's been 'black box' and my doctor refuse to give it out anymore without signing over any liability. Apparently it can cause major permanent bone loss even if you were on calcium supplements. And since I had been on it as long as I had I had to have a bone scan. They also only recommend you be on it less than 5 years.

To choose the best birth control should be based why you are on it. Are you on it for birth control or to help control cramping or your period? You should talk to your doctor about what you want. If you don't want a period every month there are pills that will turn your cycle every 3 months (can also be done with regular pills). But you best bet would be to talk to your doctor about what YOU want. Also talk about risks of the birth control you choose as well and how to reduce your chances of the risks.

I have tried it all. The shot does put weight on you. I remember nearly fainting, feeling dizzy, and having my period every 10 days the first 3 months. That was the first and last time I got the shot. On the pills, I always feel nauceous (sp?) when I'm hungry so I gotta eat right then and there. That was insane. And the Nuvaring sent me on an emotional rollercaster. I admit now I was insane and depressed like hell. The only BC I had no side effects on was the patch, but with the recent news of increased blood clots and such I don't know if you wanna risk it. But for me, once I have my baby, I will be right back on the patch.

I say get on what works for you. Stay on the pills and exercise your *** off! :D

Well just like all your answers listed already you should of course talk to your doctor. There are so many different kinds out now.

As for the shot, I have personal HORRIBLE experience. I got on the shot about 4 years ago. I decided to get on it because I didn;t know if I could trust myself with pills and because I didn't want my mom to find my pills. I didnt like the idea of the patch and I wouldn't even think about touching those Norplant things.

Your supposed to start it within the first 3 days of your period and I got the first shot on the 3 day of my period. Well I bled non stop without one break for the next 3 months. And you go back to get the 2nd shot 3 months later. Its done every 3 months. After the 3 months of bleeding I didn't have a period at all. I stayed on it for about 2 years. I regret it all. I started using it in September.... my December I gained 65 lbs, all due to this shot. It gave me HORRIBLE stretch marks covering my chest (and no my boobs are no bigger), covering my thighs and my hips. Not only that it put me through such horrible horrible mood swings. Think PMS times 1000 for 24/7/365. And to top it all off, it fully took away my sex drive. I'm still waiting for it to come back. And it gave me bad acne which I still can not keep under control.

Luckly enough my boyfriend has stuck by me through it all and we are still together. I finally decided to switch to the pills because my doctor said it would help clear up my acne, bring back my sex drive, and would help me loose some weight. Well I'm still waiting for all of that and I'm not even on any sort of birth control not because I got tired of what it all did to me. And its been about 2 years. I honestly wish now I would have just never gotten on birth control but then again I know there are just about as many people that have had great side effects and experiences with birth control.

Good luck and congratulations!!!

With the shot you will put on weight my sister has been on it for like 2 and a half years. Plus with the shot you don't have a period so the doctors will take you off the shot every now and then usually after a year or two and you will have the longest period because all that blood never got a chance to get out. Don't get the norplant my cousin got pregnant with that. Try an IUD I don't think that makes you gain weight and I know it works.

Yes the shot makes you gain weight. I was on it for a year - I have been on everything but the IUD and my fav is the nuva ring. I haven't gained weight on it. It is easy to use (leave it in for 3 weeks) and I have felt no side effects from it. I liked the patch when I was on it but my GYN won't prescribe it anymore due to the controversy.

Theres a new Nuvaring out on the market which is low in hormones and very easy to use. Your gyo can give you lots of info and discuss what it the best option for you. I heard the depo shot is hard on your body and can even make it hard for you to conceive

Take the time to talk to your OB GYN! That's where the best information comes from. There are too many new kinds of birth control out there and your doc. knows what is best for you.

i heard the shot makes you gain weight because it makes your body think its pregnant but it effects everyone differently, it could not have an effect at all.
