I heard that I should park close by, then walk? Is that possible? Where should I park? I just moved here and heard trying to get a cab back is difficult.

Seriously your best option is to go to the Strip during the DAY, and park your car at any of the major hotel casinos. If you don't want to hang out all day, have a friend or a cab take you back home, then cab it back to the Strip at night. Your car will be waiting for you when your night is over.

Most of the hotel parking garages ask for room keys to park in their lots on NYE after about 7 PM or so.

i drive to the casinos every year for new year's eve. it is very easy to park at Mandalay Bay and take the trams & crosswalks to the heart of the strip. you can drive up Frank Sinatra Blvd. to get in the back entrances of the casinos as well. the traffic is not nearly as bad as you expect, mostly taxi drivers who want to keep it moving. i stay out until dawn so there is no traffic on the way back, but Mandalay Bay is so far down the strip and right off the freeway that you should have no problem getting in and out no matter what time you go.
