I have been working at a smoothie place since 14th of December. I am 19 years old and a full-time college student so this is not some serious career thing...just extra cash. My boss is overbearing and has serious 'tude. The actual place where I work is dirty. It smells weird and there is one dishrag which is used to clean the entire place. Any leak, any spill-over from a customer's cup, any spot inside the fridge - all cleaned with the same rag. Each day the rag is changed, but they are all nasty old rags. My boss has had me working 40 hour weeks, 8 hour days, and this is CHRISTMAS BREAK. I have yet to see a paycheck. This is a franchise btw. My boss won't stop calling my cell phone to get me to work. If I am lucky, I get one day off a week, otherwise I am working a 5, 6, or 8 hour shift in this hellhole. He also pays $5.75/hour, very low wage for my state. How do I quit this job with dignity and get my paycheck from this boss-from-hell? I hate confrontation...

First of all, if you aren't scheduled to work, don't answer the phone. In the mean-time, start looking for another job. Once you find one you can do one of two things: bargain for higher wages if he wants to keep you (or if you'd work there for more), or it is a viable reason to quit. When you give a written notice (2 weeks) you simply state that you are pusuing a job opportunity that more closely follows your career ambitions and the job you are going to will be paying slightly higher wages (or has opportunity for advance or higher wages, whatever the case). Most employers at establishments like you described don't expect long-term employees anyway, so it won't really be a surprise. If they want good help to stay, they will pay more.

Wow! Poor you! Be firm. Tell the man that you cannot continue working and would like to receive your paycheck as of that date. You give him a week, if that's when the next pay period is. And if you still don't see one single dime... Sue him. And if you can't do that, for whatever reasons and he is underpaying you - you can call up, no. Go see the police or whoever those people are who are 'in charge' of the average working person. And even better, if this shop of yours has it's own union - you've won - by far! And then if you don't want to do any of this, get your Mum to scare the living-daylights out of this chap and if that doesn't work --- remember what I said... BE FIRM and to the point. Don't let this git push you around. You are (currently) an employee and you must be treated with respect. You don't work for beans, clean up a mess that will always be a mess because the git is too lazy to buy some proper cleaning cloths from the local dollar store. Tell him how it's going to be. Make the bugger sit down and listen for Heaven's sake!

Wow! I'm glad I got that off my shoulders! It upsets me to hear of buggers trying to save than extra dime by being you-know-whats... Be firm!!! Keep your chin up and STAND YOUR GROUND!! (And once you're 'outta' there and on to something better, take a breather and smile!)

Um, if you're going to cut out sugar, the best way to do it would be wean off the sugar gradually whilst substituting something healthier for the craving. For example, if you eat 50 boiled lollies a day, then for three days eat only 45 lollies, then go down to 40 lollies with a couple of dried apricots. Keep going until you only have one or two (if any) boiled lollies a day, and a small handful of dried fruit + fresh fruit and lemon juice in soda/water to keep your sweet tooth happy. You still need something like 60g of carbohydrates a day, so don't cut out too much sugar from 'good' sources like fresh fruit okay.

I would quit when you get your pay check. You should know when pay day is, if you don't - ask! It's customary to give two-weeks notice, but if you don't think it's worth it take your check & go.

I usually recommend lining up another job first and explaining things to that employer. And, considering the sanitary conditions your talking about, you may consider reporting the place to the state or county health inspector.

You're a full-time college student. You should not be working 40 hour weeks. You're education should be first on your list of priorities.

Good Luck!

Put your resignation in writing letting him know that you need to resign due to conflict in your educational schedule. Give him at least 2 weeks and then speak with him about getting your paycheck and the last time you got one, if you did.

Keep a copy of the letter you wrote and let him know that you have a copy for your own personal records and then leave on the day you say you will.

If you haven't seen your paycheck when its due. Give him a call and ask when u will get it. If not, take him to small claims court.

find something else and quit. Since it is not a "serious" job you are not required to give two weeks although it is always better to do so in case a prosptective employer wants to run a job check for good references.

Simply ask your boss when you will be getting paid. After you receive the money then tell him you wont have time to work anymore due to your school schedule.

well, he HAS to give you your paycheck no matter what.

you can either just put in your two weeks' notice, or you can just not show up. If it were me, I would just stop showing up and leave him a message to mail you your last paycheck.

Throw a smoothie in his face, give the finger to all the customers in the store, grab a blender, and run out of the store.

He has to give you your paycheck by law.
