The US calls its 14 bases "enduring bases". Doesn't that sound much better than permanent? Previously hungry people are now just experiencing "food insecurity" too.

As for Congress passing anything-Bush's signing statements mean he can do anything he wants.

Before any General in any war makes a war plan, the first thing he needs is a map. If we were serious about the war on terror and we believed the countries that George Bush listed as the axis of evil, they all border Iraq with the exception of North Korea. With bases in Iraq and Afghanistan, we have a huge strategic advantage in launching air strikes or special operation missions. Like it or not I think we are in this for the long haul.

Our "permanent" bases allow our forces a place to plan, prepare, and execute missions within a certain region. When we're done in that area, those Forward Operating Bases are turned over to the Iraqi Iraqi army to be used for the same purpose. They are not OUR permanent bases to hold until the end of time.

After WWII we setup bases in Germany, and was there prob 50 yrs or more, and it was nothing like the chaos going on in Iraq.....so figure on making Iraq a regular duty tour for the armed forces, and hey in the future, it may be a cool vacation spot that the conservative, can take their family to, so they can ride the camel, and look at all the oil wells, and lots of sand.

Because the US is not leaving Iraq. They're using it to build military bases to prepare to an all-out WW3. Next is going to Iran because of that psychopath Mahmoud Ahmedinjad who wants to blow up ireal and the US(or the Great satan as he calls it). This is not a war against iraq-this is a war against Islamic facism.

Look at Japan and Korea. Our military is still there. Why would Iraq be any different?

Because of our long history of not staying anywhere once we've invaded.

We invaded Mexico, are we in Mexico? No
We invaded Spain's territory in Florida, Cuba and Puerto Rico. Are we in Cuba? only a small part of it.
We invaded Germany. Are we in Germany? only because it's good for the world.
We Invaded Colombia. Are we in Colombia? no. We created Panama and we kept only a small part of it... just the canal that's all we wanted.
We invaded Japan. Are still in Okinawa?

I could go on and on but you get the idea. They should just trust us.
