He's not asking how long the format will be viable commercially - he's asking how long the media itself will last. Both HD-DVD and BluRay are backward-compatible, which means that players for both formats will play standard DVDs and DVDRs as well. Not to mention the fact that most consumers are going to wait until one format becomes dominant (Digital Compact Cassette and Minidisk, anyone?)

So long s you take care of the DVD it should last for life. Keep them out of direct sunlight as DVD-R is more likely to be afected by light than pressed dvd.
One of the formats is suppose to be slightly better for long term storage as the thickness of plastic over the layer is thicker but I can't remember if it is DVD+R or DVD-R however I don't think it is much of a problem. Also if storage time is most important it would be worth paying extra for dvds with a lifetime guarantee.

It will last as long or as short as you want it too...all depends on if you take great care of it or if you throw it on top of the dvd player instead of putting it in the case when you're done with it...

Theoretically, forever.
You do need to look after them though. You can't get them scratched too much or store them too close to magnetic fields.
