GREAT ANSWERS. To clean the papers, put them in a paper bag, place them in the freezer for 8 hours then take them outside and knock the dust off. The freezing will sublimate the moisture out of them, and break the bond between the mold and paper.

You'll need to separate the safe from the moisture, either by moving the safe or by airing out the area around it. Also, open the safe and allow the interior to completely dry out. Cleaning it with a mild solution of bleach & water should help kill the mold spoors, again making sure it's completely dried out after. You might want to put something inside the safe to absorb excess moisture. I'm not sure what, but a bit of research on Google (or a good answer from someone else) might shed some light on that particular question.

Mold can only grow in the presence of moisture. Get rid of the moisture and the mold will stop growing. Get a dehumidifier and place it near the safe. Also place some raw rice inside the safe and change it monthly. The rice will absorb any moisture that gets in there.

put a tub of Damp Rid in there. you can find it in hardware stores, it comes in various size containers, likely to find one that fits. and increase air movement around the safe, i.e.leave the closet door open. good luck
