I've studied solo for a long while after being tought by a higher degree and have maintained a steady study habit. Can I continue on this path without initiations in an order? Should I join an order and progress in degree?

The short answer is yes, but in the long run your knowledge base and experience will be short. To get a more rounded knowledge and experience base you would have to join an Order.

Although many of the old guarded secrets may be found in books these days or even on the internet, this is no substitute for a good mentor, guide or lodge. Many things cannot be learnt from a theoretical standpoint offered from books alone, guidance is required.

It just depends on how serious you are, and how far you wish to progress.

I hope this helps.
