What is substrate in regards to fish tanks?

Substrate is gravel, sand and rocks and driftwood too, anything that sits on the bottom of your tank and grows beneficial bacteria, turning the nitrates (poisonous) into nitrites (not poisonous) in the tank.

substrate is the stuff on the bottom of your tank... gravel, sand etc...

there are poor substrate.. gravel & sand...
and rich substrate... flourite, aqua soil, laterite etc...

if you plan to have plants in your aquarium, a rich substrate is one of the things you'd need.
