I can't remember much about it, A teacher read it in class when i was in 4th grade, so it would have been around 1982.
All I remember of the story was a young boy was hiding in someone's house and found a door to a mysterious land.. In the land there was a bird that was always flying around screaming MAYDAY!! not much to go on I know but any help would be appreciated.

Have you asked a children's librarian? They read constantly and are familiar with older books too. And if they don't recognize the book from your description, they may be able to point you to other resources. There are email discussion groups for librarians, for example, and they can be a great place to ask questions such as yours.
